Porgy and Bess tells the story of Porgy, a disabled black beggar living in the slums of Charleston, South Carolina. It deals with his attempts to rescue Bess from the clutches of Crown, her violent and possessive lover, and Sportin’ Life, the drug dealer.
The song “Summertime” is the best-known selection from Porgy and Bess. Other popular and frequently recorded songs from the opera include “It Ain’t Necessarily So”, “Bess, You Is My Woman Now”, “I Loves You, Porgy” and “I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin'”. The opera is admired for Gershwin’s innovative synthesis of European orchestral techniques with American jazz and folk music idioms.

I thoroughly enjoyed this play, and I’m glad I went. The play itself was good, not great, but getting dressed up and going on a fancy date with a gentleman admirer was very cool. After all, my New Year’s resolution for 2014 was to be more cultured and whatnot. I ran into Starbucks to get us some coffee before heading across the bridge, and they were playing Joe Jackson’s “Steppin’ Out” which I thought was perfect.
